Coeur D’Alene, Idaho – A Travel Guide: Your Next Lakeside Vacay

August 18, 2017 in Travel

So this is somewhat of a guest post in that I only got to spend a day in Coeur D’Alene before we headed off to Spokane and Seattle. But I interviewed my mom and sister who spent a week there and got the low down on the best places to go on your Idaho vacay! To start off Coeur D’Alene is a little lakeside town in the upper skinny portion of Idaho. They suffer (in my opinion!) through 7 probably awful months of winter but in the summer it is a stunning place to visit. Julianne Hough actually got married in Coeur D’Alene this past summer! If you are a lake junkie, a golf addict, or love vacationing in new exciting places (this girl!) then Coeur D’Alene, Idaho should be on your travel list!

Where to Stay in Coeur D’Alene

My mom was there for a convention so we stayed at the Coeur D’Alene Resort – check it out here. The rooms are a bit dated but there is tons to do, a variety of restaurants, and you are right on the lake.

Coeur D'Alene

Our favorite part of the hotel is the infinity pool. To get there you take an awesome vintage boat across the lake. The hotel’s golf course is also along the lake and features the hotel’s most popular attraction, The Floating Green. The Floating Green is the 14th hole of the golf course and is actually a man made island floating out on the lake. You tee off from the shore then take the vintage boat out to the green. If you are a golfer than this course is a must when visiting. If you aren’t then check out the floating green on your way to the pool!

Where to Eat in Coeur D’Alene

I was the most bummed when I got the details on all their dining adventures. I seriously missed out. They went out for pretty much every meal and from their account, really partied it up!

The Cedars Floating Restaurant

This is a floating steak and seafood restaurant that is owned by the same person that owns the resort. There is a free shuttle to take you to and from the hotel which makes it super convenient for a night out. They loved the steak and seafood options, the giant salad bar, and said it was the best clam chowder they had ever had.

Fire Artisan Pizza

This pizza place was near the cute boutiques I will cover in a bit. We walked by but they had eaten their prior so we didn’t go in. It was a super cute place. They recommended the chicken pesto pizza.

Crafted Tap House + Kitchen

Meghan said this was the best place they ate during their week there. They had huge portions, the was food amazing, and the atmosphere was great. This restaurant is located near Fire and is near the shops. My mom and sister recommended sharing portions and to make sure to get the giant pretzel appetizer.

Dockside

This is one of the restaurants at the resort. It is a great restaurant with stunning views of the mountains and the lake. We ate there for breakfast the morning I was there and enjoyed the eggs benedict, all American breakfast, and the huckleberry pancakes along with huckleberry mimosas and an awesome bloody mary. They also stopped in one evening prior and tried out the huckleberry cheesecake ice cream! (Am I making you hungry yet?)

Dinner Buffet Cruise

One thing they didn’t do but another couple at the convention did one night was the dinner buffet cruise offered at the resort. It is $50 a person and you enjoy and evening out on the lake. We will definitely be adding this to the agenda for next time.

The Shops On Sherman

Things to Do in Coeur D’Alene

The Shops On Sherman

Within walking distance of the hotel there are a bunch of cute boutiques and shops in the downtown area. My sister got an adorable floral maxi that was perfect for my sister’s upcoming baby shower. A lot of the shops were really well priced as well. This would make for a fun afternoon with girlfriends. Head down to the main street area and grab lunch, do some shopping and then hit up happy hour at a local bar!

Rent a Pontoon

One of the nights, they rented a pontoon with the group from the convention. They boated along the lake and stopped at a bunch of different fun bars during their night out. My sister’s favorite bar was Shooters. They had the best drinks and an amazing huckleberry vodka. (My sister is now addicted to anything huckleberry!)

Coeur D'Alene

Infinity Pool

They spent a few days (including the day I was there) lounging by the pool. The food at the poolside bar was really good and very well priced. This is the most stunning pool I have ever been in. The views were absolutely tremendous and the boat taxi makes it sort of an adventure to get there. The day we were all there it was a bit overcast and I decided to be risky and not put on sunscreen. Bad call on my part – I got an awful sunburn only 4 days into our 2 week trip! PUT ON SUNSCREEN!

White Water Rafting

Coeur D’Alene is located in the middle of the skinny part of Idaho so you are less than an hour away from the Washington and Montana borders on either side. (Spokane is the best airport to fly into.) The day before I arrived they went with their group to Western Waters in Montana for some white water rafting. Both my mom and sister said this was the highlight of their trip. Neither had been white water rafting before and had a blast going down the river, cliff jumping, and eyeing the cute river guides. My sister said you are 10/10 guaranteed to have a cute raft guide! 😉

Huckleberry Shakes

After rafting they stopped for some awesome huckleberry shakes. They didn’t remember the name of the spot but here is a list to help you narrow it down! Either way I think you are in for a treat!

For Next Time

My mom and sister didn’t fit everything they wanted to do in one trip. We compiled a wishlist for the more adventurous type. It includes zip lining, renting jet skis, hiking, golf, and open air concerts. Overall they said to get out on the lake as much as you can.

Huckleberry Pucker & Huckleberry Hard Cider

Huckleberry

You have to make sure you fit a few huckleberry items in while in Idaho. During my note taking on their trip my sister would stop and say “oh yeah and we also had huckleberry ________!” (My sister is OBSESSED!) We made a list of all the different huckleberry items they tried.

Huckleberry Adventures: Lotion, chapstick, jelly, cobbler, shakes, wine, cheesecake ice cream, mimosa, beer (huckleberry pucker & huckleberry cider), regular cider, vinaigrette, green tea from Starbucks (My sister is pretty mad they don’t have this everywhere, like why not?), vodka lemonade, moscow mules, and pancakes!

Coeur D'Alene

Let’s just say it won’t take much work to find something huckleberry. What are you waiting for? Go book your trip!!!
