Ok, so I might be humble bragging a bit by calling our own work unbelievable but honestly, we just can’t believe we turned our crappy run down deck into essentially a Home and Gardens spread. #sorrynotsorry
It all started, as all project should, with a good deck renovation plan. We revamped our railing – you can check out the story and some helpful tips! Then we slathered on some paint and deck resurfacer. And voila! A modern boho outdoor space dream! Above is our deck halfway through the new railing being installed. (I am kicking myself for not getting pics of this with the old railing!) It was old, moldly, and definitely needed some new life breathed into it! Ready for some killer before and afters?
Pretty awesome right? I know I always say this but I seriously can’t believe how good it turned out! It is so bright and fresh and new and matches the house so well now instead of looking like some crappy wooden blob attaching itself to our house. We were surprised how much space we had too. We have plenty of room for a dining area, outdoor living space, grill area, and a ton of extra space in between.
Let me start off by introducing you to my lovely Vanna White’s for the evening, Camp, our Brittany spaniel, and Bella, our friend Kyle’s pup! They helped test the products for reliability and comfortableness.
We’ll start with the outdoor lounge area since it’s my favorite. It was pretty hard to photograph the hanging chairs so trust me on this, if it looks good in the picture it is WAY better in person. I debated on doing one chair versus two but decided to follow the wise advice of my friend Mycah “one chair is dreamy, so why wouldn’t you want double dreaminess!” (Want some dreaminess of your own! The Target sectional was the priciest purchase but it is super comfortable and really ties the space together. We got it on sale during Memorial weekend and added in a few wedding gift cards to make it come in under $250. The rug was only $40 from IKEA and is only rated for indoor but I decided to go for it. I’ll keep you updated as to how it holds up.
We tried to keep the decor minimal so the space is easy to clean up in case there is a storm. The only things we have to pick up are the citronella candles, throw pillows, move the plants up toward the house, and we have the option to easily remove the chairs. We had a heavy rain come through that completely trashed our neighbors trampoline and nothing on our deck even moved.
Pup tested and approved!
We were pretty much through our budget so to add in some decor I really relied on some affordable plants and minimal decor. The pink pillows are not outdoor approved but they were only $4 from Walmart so I don’t really care if they only last me through this summer. The macrame pillow is from World Market and IS for outdoor use – how fun right!? I got the citronella striped candles from At Home, the planters from IKEA, and the fun coasters from Walmart.
Lights are always a must for any outdoor space and we found the best deal at Target on these glass dome ones. We used about 3 strands and strung them above the pergola but let the hang loosely down. I think the lights are JR’s favorite part of the whole space – he is always itching to turn them on the second the sun goes down!
I had the hardest time finding an affordable coffee table – everything was in the $100-120 range and I stumbled upon this Target fire pit online for $63. JR picked up a $5 piece of plywood from Lowe’s and made an insert to make it drink and decor friendly – I will have a DIY Target hack post up soon! The cover fits nicely inside so you don’t have to worry about storing that someplace either!
Those lights and a nice evening fire, dreamy! We couldn’t find any cheap firewood at the grocery store one day and ended up getting a few of these roasting logs – seriously so easy. I think I prefer these over cheap logs. They are so easy to light and don’t make a giant smokey flame that follows you around no matter where you sit. That doesn’t just happen to me, right?
The dining set was probably my favorite find – I got it on Craigslist for $30! I gave it a fresh coat of paint, added some cushions from At Home and cleaned up the top. It adds such fun boho touch!
We really wanted to build one of those outdoor tables with the built in coolers but decided to stick with what we got for now. We picked up this vintage cooler from Junkstock a few years ago and it fits right in! I really want to find a good durable bar cart for this little grilling nook though – we’ve made ribs a few times these past few weeks and it would be so convenient to have a little table to wrap them in foil and season them at.
We have had people over 4 times since we finished up and ran out of seats 3 times with so many people coming over. We picked up these folding chairs from IKEA for $10/piece and they are so cute and comfortable. We might have to get more if we get more popular! I really want to do a fun drink/bar cart serving area in this little nook. Maybe a project for July?
We are hosting about 30 people this weekend for a 3 on 3 Delta Chi basketball tournament. I guess you could say my husband is quite the “balla” – ha! I love that our deck over looks the
driveway court. It will make for a fun Saturday!
There you have it folks! A deck that makes you feel super summery happy (see left photo) and also like you are a super fancy Hamptons person who sends someone to “open” their home in May (see right.)
Now you don’t think I would leave you hanging without a little piece of paradise for yourself? Enter for a chance to win one of THE most comfortable chairs ever made.
