I am a huge movie buff and on an average weekend I manage to squeeze in about 3-4 movies. I love to wake up on a Saturday morning while my husband sleeps in and scroll through Netflix until I find something I haven’t seen or a favorite I haven’t watched in a while. I love seeing the blockbusters in theaters and there is rarely an Oscar nomination that goes unviewed through awards season in our house.
ABCFamily Freeform (ugh) can really get me hooked on Harry Potter and now I pretty much have to rewatch all of Star Wars every holiday season in anticipation for the new release. I will watch anything and everything as long as it’s not gory or scary. I love a good romance, comedy, drama or action-adventure. JR prefers comedies and action movies so I try to save those for date nights and nights spent at home.
So if you are at home snuggled up on the couch for a relaxing lazy Sunday afternoon, here are 10 underrated movies sure to make your day! (Titles linked to Amazon digital rentals!)
The Next Three Days
I don’t know how this one slipped under the radar but if you like suspense and action this is a go to. Elizabeth Banks and Russell Crowe? Uh yes please! We found this one randomly on Netflix one afternoon and it was a hidden gem. Pick this one if you like: Law Abiding Citizen, Prison Break, Shawshank Redemption.
We found this one on a Top Movies of 2016 list. It was on Netflix for a while but isn’t anymore. 🙁 It has a very similar vibe to Dazed and Confused. The only thing that left me disappointed was the ending but it was still definitely worth the watch. If you are looking for a funny feel good with great music this is the one for you. Pick this one if you like: Dazed and Confused, Superbad, The Breakfast Club
I found this one top rated on Amazon Prime for free. It is a biopic about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. It was the perfect amount of historical, drama, and music with some really great actors. Pick this one if you like: Walk the Line, Straight Outta Compton, Across the Universe
This one is eerily similar to The Time Traveler’s wife since it features Rachel McAdams. It is a lot less sad and very fun and romantic. A perfect pick for a date night in. Pick this one if you like: Begin Again, Love Actually, The Theory of Everything
Shooter may not be exactly underrated but it is my family’s all time favorite Sunday-afternoon/post-Thanksgiving movie. I’m not exaggerating, one day we played in FOUR times in a row. A favorite action pick your dad will love. Pick this one if you like: Air Force One, American Sniper, Jack Reacher
This one is available on Netflix right now. It is a fairly recent release but upon mentioning it to a few friends most said they had never heard of it or watched it. I was a little nervous because anything having to do with boats and the deep ocean makes me claustrophobic but it was way worth it. And it is based on a true story which makes it way more feel good and gives you some research for after. Pick this one if you like: The Guardian, Unbroken, Act of Valor
I love this movie so much and it probably tops the list as one of my favorite comedies. It is like an adult female version of School of Rock. Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, need I say more? Pick this one if you like: School of Rock, Mean Girls, Bridesmaids
I think this one came in WAY under the radar even though I remember seeing the trailer in theaters. I think the trailer is a little too deceptive so definitely give it a chance – you won’t be sorry. It’s one of those movies that will leave you saying “what the heck just happened?” Pick this one if you like: Ocean’s Eleven, The Italian Job, Inside Man
Do not watch this one with your mom unless you are prepared to bawl your eyes out. I would file this under drama and suspense. It is a little thriller/scary so I would suggest watching it while the sun is still out (if you’re a wimp like me.) It’s available on Amazon Prime for free right now! Pick this one if you like: My Sister’s Keeper, The Pursuit of Happiness, Taken
JR and I are OBSESSED with Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell. We (JR) are also obsessed with any kind of souped up vintage cars. The perfect mix of action and romcom perfect for snuggling on the couch on a Sunday night. Pick this one if you like: Smokey and the Bandit, The Bounty Hunter, Date Night
Bonus! (I thought of this one while making the list!)
Jason Bateman is hilarious in this spelling bee comedy. Complete with a cute kid and a heartfelt ending this is a perfect pick for when you hangout with your mom scrapbooking one afternoon – as long as your mom is good with a few f-bombs. Pick this one if you like: Juno, This Is Where I Leave You, Silver Linings Playbook
